Queen Elizabeth Prize for Thayer School’s Eric Fossum

Eric Fossum, Professor at the Thayer School of Engineering, Director of Thayer’s PhD innovation program, and Associate Provost for Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering for his invention of the CMOS image sensor, a device that enables high-powered cameras to fit inside smart phones. Fossum will share this £1 million prize with three others for their contributions to the sensor technology: Nobukazu Teranishi, a research professor at University of Hyogo and Shizuoka University in Japan and retired Bell Lab scientists Michael Tompsett and George Smith.
