Dartmouth students and young alumni will be studying and working abroad in the coming year on fellowships awarded by the Fulbright Program and the Deutscher Akademischer Audtausch Dienst (DAAD) for study in Germany.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides funding for students, scholars, teachers, and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools in more than 155 countries.

DAAD is the German Academic Exchange Service, a national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. It offers programs and funding for American and Canadian students, faculty, researchers, and others in higher education.

“These students’ motivations mesh well with the DAAD’s and the Fulbright program’s missions of cross-cultural exchange, says Kristin O’Rourke, assistant dean for scholarship advising. “These scholars and teaching assistants go abroad and learn from other cultures, and then bring back that knowledge to the U.S., enriching understanding all around.”

Many of them, she says, will be building on projects they began working on through research or other avenues during their undergraduate careers at Dartmouth.

This has been an outstanding season for Fulbrights at Dartmouth, O’Rourke says, with 13 winners in so far, the most in recent years. The Fulbright and DAAD winners, she notes, join other 2014 Dartmouth honorees for scholarship and fellowship programs, including the Rhodes, Beinecke, Carnegie, Goldwater, and Truman.
