Laurel Stavis

Assistant Provost for International Initiatives

Laurel Stavis is Assistant Provost for International Initiatives at Dartmouth, where she develops and implements Dartmouth's global engagement strategies. She oversees institutional programs in Japan, Kosovo, Sweden, Brazil, The Arctic, among others, and represents Dartmouth for the Matariki Network of Universities, comprised of leading institutions in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Sweden, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Ms. Stavis is Program Director at Dartmouth for numerous initiatives in Kosovo, including USAID/World Learning’s  “Transformational Leadership,” and is a member of the steering committee for a collaboration with the Ministry of Health.

She serves on Dartmouth’s Global Incident Response Team and is a member of the Council on International Initiatives. From 2008 to 2012 she led Dartmouth’s pioneering partnership with the American University of Kuwait, the first private liberal arts university in the Arabian Gulf, where she counseled the President and Board of Trustees; developed collaborative programs between the two institutions; and worked with Kuwait government officials on higher education policy and procedures. She is a member of the Association of International Education Administrators, and serves on that group’s Policy Advisory Committee. She is also a member of NAFSA: the Association of International Educators.

Ms. Stavis came to Dartmouth in 1996 as director of the Office of Public Affairs, a role in which she led the institution's central communications and public relations functions. Previously, she directed Public Affairs and Government Relations at Wellesley College in Massachusetts from 1986 to 1995. She is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, and pursued graduate studies in executive management at Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts.
